What's Coming Up
After three road matches to open the season, Fresno State comes home this week for the first two contests of the season at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs (1-2) host Sacramento State on Saturday at 2 p.m. and San Francisco on Sunday at noon.
What Just Happened
Fresno State kicked off its season with three road matches. The Bulldogs opened with a 4-3 victory at UC Irvine, snapping the team's 10-match road losing streak. Alex Krohn's three-set win at No. 6 singles clinched the win. On Friday, top-ranked UCLA had its way with Fresno State in a 7-0 victory. But the next day, the Bulldogs took No. 7-ranked USC to the limit, falling 4-3. This time is was Krohn falling in three sets in the clinching match. Fresno State's result against USC is even more impressive when the absence of No. 1 player Hector Almada is taken into consideration. The junior did not accompany the Bulldogs to Los Angeles for their matches with UCLA and the Trojans.
All-Time vs. This Week's Opponents
Fresno State has never lost to either of this week's opponents. The Bulldogs are 5-0 all-time against Sacramento State, the last match being a 7-0 victory in 2000. San Francisco and Fresno State have only hooked up once, that coming in 1985, a 9-0 Bulldog win.
Shearer Notches Good Win
Greg Shearer picked up one of his biggest victories as a Bulldog in Saturday's 4-3 loss at No. 7 USC. The sophomore from Christchurch, New Zealand, knocked off 75th-ranked Johan Berg at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. The win improved Shearer to 7-5 (2-1 dual) on the season.
Tough Schedule
As is customary for the Bulldogs, they are taking on a very challenging dual match schedule in 2003. Fresno State plays eight teams currently appearing in the national rankings, a number that is sure to rise once it is determined who it will play in the always-tough Blue-Gray Classic in March.
