What's Coming Up
Ranked 61st in the nation, Fresno State (7-5) heads to Montgomery, Ala., this week for the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic. The annual tournament features some of the nation's top teams and guarantees schools at least three matches during the week. The draw for the tournament is revealed Tuesday.
What Just Happened
The Bulldogs split two matches in Seattle, falling to No. 10 Washington 6-1 before taking a neutral-site match against No. 41 San Diego 6-1. Against the Huskies, Sergiu Modoc at No. 6 singles was the lone Fresno State player to claim victory. One day later, the Bulldogs upset the Toreros. Modoc once again posted a singles victory.
Modoc Earns WAC Player of the Week Honors
Sergiu Modoc was named WAC Player of the Week after winning his singles matches at No. 6 against Ryan Livesay of No. 10 Washington and Nic Caldwell of No. 41 San Diego. The freshman is now 6-3 on the year after joining the team in January. Modoc has yet to lose a match this year at No. 6 singles, where he is 5-0.
A Tough March
The Bulldogs enter the month of March with momentum gained from victories in three matches the final weekend of February. This momentum will be very important as Fresno State now enters one of its most difficult stretches of the season. The team is scheduled to play four dual matches during the month, all of which come against teams currently nationally ranked. In addition, the Bulldogs will be playing in the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. While there, they are guaranteed to face some of the country's best programs.
The Crucial Doubles Point
Coaches love to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point at the outset of every match. But for Fresno State, winning at least two of three doubles matches has proven to be imperative. The Bulldogs are 6-0 when they win the point this year and 1-5 when they do not.
