FRESNO, Calif. - Junior outfielder Tory Davis went 2-for-3 with three RBI Wednesday to lead Fresno State to a 7-2 win over Penn State in the 25th annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic Wednesday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs improve to 9-12 overall, winning their fourth in a row while the Nittany Lions drop to 2-4, losing for the first time in the tournament.
Fresno State completed red division play in first place with a 3-0 record and will play Bowling Green in a cross-divisional match-up Thursday at 7 p.m.
Davis clubbed his third home run of the season in the first inning with a two-run shot off Penn State starter Arin Gelletly (0-1) who surrendered six runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings to pick up the loss. Davis also added a run-scoring single in the third inning to snap a 2-2 tie and give the Bulldogs the lead for good.
The Bulldogs have now scored 30 runs over the first three games of the tournament. Junior infielder Casey McGehee went 1-for-3 with a double and is now three hits shy of 200 in his Bulldog career.
Junior right-hander Cody Smith (3-2) scattered runs two runs (none earned) on six hits while striking out four over five innings to win his second straight decision. David Griffin, Chad Edwards, and Bryan Wolfenbarger pitched a combined four shutout innings in relief to seal the victory.
Penn State catcher Matt Harter went 3-for-4 and drove in both of the team's runs with an RBI double in the third inning to lead the Nittany Lions.
