What's Coming Up
Fresno State (7-5) takes this week off in preparation for a busy week coming up. Beginning March 24, the Bulldogs take on four ranked opponents in seven days, all away from Fresno. However, in an odd scheduling quirk, only one of those contests is a true road match. The other three will be played at a neutral site.
What's Just Happened
The Bulldogs went 2-1 last week, winning against both No. 38 Pennsylvania and No. 27 Arizona at home 4-3 while losing on the road to No. 4 California 6-1. Lucia Tallo and eighth-ranked Chloe Carlotti were both 2-1 on the week in singles.
Six is Enough, Hopefully
With the season-ending knee injury to Courtney Jantz, Fresno State is down to just six players for the remainder of the season. And those six players comprise one of the youngest starting lineups in the nation. The Bulldogs regulars consist of four freshmen and two sophomores. Jantz suffered her injury in the season opener against Cal Poly.
Tallo Proves Her Worth
It was quite a week for Lucia Tallo, who played the role of hero in both of Fresno State's victories. Against No. 38 Pennsylvania, she grinded out a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) win over Nikki Ptak to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 victory. Just five days later, she did it again with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 triumph over 45th-ranked Dianne Hollands of No. 27 Arizona. It marked the first two times in her career the sophomore found herself in a match-clinching scenario. Tallo has now won five of her last six match and is 11-8 (8-4 dual) on the year. Her clutch victories earned her WAC Player of the Week honors.
Bulldogs in the Rankings
For the third consecutive ranking, Fresno State remained at No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's team poll. But it was Chloe Carlotti who made the biggest splash, moving up to No. 8 in the singles rankings, becoming the first Bulldog since Dora Djilianova in 1999 to break into the top 10. She is 19-7 (10-2 dual) on the season. In doubles, Carlotti and partner Lucia Tallo broke into the rankings at No. 23. The tandem is 7-2 (3-1 dual) this year.
