What's Coming Up
Fresno State (9-6) hits the road this week for two matches in Boise, Idaho. On Friday, the Bulldogs take on 59th-ranked BYU at 11 a.m. PT. The team finishes the week up with a road contest against No. 51 Boise State on Saturday at 10 a.m. Fresno State has currently won six of its last eight matches and has eclipsed last year's win total.
What Just Happened
Fresno State on Saturday resumed its match with Harvard, which was started March 15 at the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. With the team score tied 3-3, Sergiu Modoc came through with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) win over Jason Beren to claim victory for Fresno State.
A Tough March
The Bulldogs entered a very tough month of March with three consecutive victories and haven't let up. Fresno State is 3-2 in March despite playing five ranked opponents, something that has moved the Bulldogs up to 50th in the nation. Things get no easier for the team this week with contests against No. 51 Boise State and No. 59 BYU. The schedule eases up a bit in April, in which Fresno State plays just two ranked opponents.
The Crucial Doubles Point
Coaches love to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point at the outset of every match. But for Fresno State, winning at least two of three doubles matches has proven to be imperative. The Bulldogs are 7-0 when they win the point this year and 2-6 when they do not.
Modoc Keeps Winning
Fresno State seems to have found an anchor at No. 6 singles in Sergiu Modoc, a freshman who joined the team in January. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native owns a 7-4 record but has been especially impressive at No. 6, where he owns a perfect 6-0 record. In addition, Modoc teams with Hector Almada to form a solid No. 1 doubles team. The duo has combined to go 7-3 since joining forces.
