FRESNO, Calif. - Despite using an unfamiliar formula, Fresno State was still able to survive through a 4-3 victory over BYU on Saturday in a neutral-site match in Boise, Idaho.
The Bulldogs (10-6) won their third in a row despite absorbing losses at Nos. 1 and 6 singles, two of their strongest positions this year. But the middle of the Fresno State lineup held firm and came to the rescue, eventually clinching the victory.
The match began with the Bulldogs claiming the doubles point. The tandem of Sergiu Modoc and Hector Almada won 8-6 at No. 1 over Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman to pace Fresno State.
The Bulldogs are now 8-0 this season when winning the doubles point.
In singles, Almada, who was 9-4 at No. 1 singles, and Modoc, 6-0 at No. 6, both lost their matches to their opponents from BYU (7-9). But Stefan Suta helped Fresno State's cause with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2. The victory was Suta's 22nd on the year, a team high.
Also posting singles wins for the Bulldogs were Greg Shearer at No. 3 and Marc Schaerer at No. 4. Shearer's triumph came by scores of 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 over Jose Lechuga while Schaerer's was much easier, 6-3, 6-4 against Alonso Medina.
Fresno State, ranked a season-high 45th in the nation, takes on No. 51 Boise State on Sunday at noon.
