MEN: Fresno State 162, Mt. San Antonio College 135, Bakersfield College 71.
WOMEN: Fresno State 133, Mt. San Antonio College 64.
FRESNO, Calif.- Both Mt. San Antonio College and Bakersfield College were willing to compete at the Division 1 level on Saturday afternoon and challenge the Bulldogs, but Fresno State responded with first-place finishes for both men and women in its first outdoor home meet of the season.
The men's team finished with 162 points, besting runner-up Mt. SAC at 135. Bakersfield College placed third with 71. The Fresno State women earned 133 points to lock up first place over Mt. SAC, which recorded 64. Bakersfield College does not have a women's squad.
The Fresno State women's team registered a first-place finish in every event on the afternoon, while the men collected victories in 11 of the 19 scheduled events.
Junior Joe Vasquez (Selma, Calif.) picked up two titles on the day, winning the discus with a mark of 51.60m and a throw of 56.48 in the hammer- the latter turning out to be a qualifying mark. Other field event winners included: sophomore Russell Weaver (Clovis, Calif.) in the pole vault at 4.75, freshman Donald Hawthorne (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) in the triple jump with a leap of 13.56m, junior Trevor Chatterton (Concord, Calif.) in the high jump at 1.83m and sophomore Javon Kemp (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the javelin at 57.30m.
Sophomore Chris Berrian (Winton, Calif.) ran a career-best 21.33 in the 200-meter run to win the event, while senior Alex Mason (Alameda, Calif.) and Phil Ogilvie (Clarksburg, Calif.) captured titles in the 1500-meter and steeplechase, respectively.
Both the 4x100 and 4x400- meter relay squads for the men also took first place.
The women's club dominated its portion of the meet, winning every event and often placing two or three entrants in the top-five. Junior Katie Christianson (Indian Wells, Calif.) paced the Bulldogs with three first-place efforts: 100-meter hurdles (14.17), long jump (5.63m) and javelin (31.42m).
Four different Bulldogs won at least two events- sophomore Crystal Phillips (Long Beach, Calif.), senior Lisa Krauter (Clovis, Calif.), junior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) and junior Jenny Moore (Upland, Calif.). Phillips claimed the 100-meter run with a time of 12.14 and the 200-meters at 24.65. June was also successful on the ground, taking first in both the 1,500 and 5,000-meter races.
Moore's victories came via the jumps, checking in at 1.58m in the high jump and 11.42m in the triple jump. Kratuer led Fresno State in the field events with wins in the hammer throw (41.22m) and discus (44.94m).
Junior Lexine Lesser (Hanford, Calif.) earned an NCAA qualifying mark with her first place finish in the pole vault at 3.81m- a new career best. Senior Mandy Hollister (Turlock, Calif.) was crowned the champion in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:03.09.
Sophomores Jennifer Tyler (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Courtney Stewart (Castro Valley, Calif.) also came through with first place efforts, in addition to freshmen Sunny Arada (Clovis, Calif.) and La' Sha Hill (Oakland, Calif.)
Next up for the Bulldogs will be the 75th annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays, which get underway with the small high schools competition on Thursday afternooon.
