FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football team is counting down to the 2003 season opener at Tennessee Aug. 30 and continuing to prepare for the season in week two of spring practices. The Bulldogs will hold their first scrimmage on Friday, March 7, at 4 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. The scrimmage is open to the public.
"We are very happy with the attitude and team chemistry that is being built" head coach Pat Hill said. "Spring ball is very important for building fundamentals in young players but also for starting to build that chemistry for the fall. These guys have been working really hard and shown a great commitment since the day after the Georgia Tech win. We only have 177 days before the Tennessee game, so we have to get a lot of work done before that."
The scrimmage will be the first of two held this spring with the next one scheduled for March 14. The Bulldogs will conclude the spring practice session with the annual Spring Game on March 21 at 3 p.m.
Fresno State returns nine offensive starters, including single season rushing leader Rodney Davis and WAC Freshman of the Year Paul Pinegar at quarterback. Also returning is 2001 All-American Bernard Berrian, who missed the 2002 season with a knee injury. He is at full strength and participating in spring drills.
"We have the potential to be the best offensive teams we've had since I've been here," said Hill. "We have so much more depth in the skilled positions than we've ever had. We will have a lot of weapons who can score from a variety of positions on the field."
The Bulldogs are coming off a 9-5 record and a 30-21 win over Georgia Tech in the Silicon Valley Football Classic.
