Baseball Outlasts UC Irvine, 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior outfielder Scott Beshears hit a game-winning home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning as Fresno State held on for a 4-3 victory over UC Irvine Tuesday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 21-17 overall while the Anteaters fall to 15-23 overall. Fresno State swept the season series from UCI 3-0.
Beshears' walk-off homer was his fourth of the season and came off UCI's Mike Davern (0-1) who picked up the loss. Beshears went 3-5 with two runs scored for the game.
Fresno State scored two runs in the sixth to snap a scoreless tie. Junior infielder Ryan Haag tallied a RBI single to plate freshman Kent Sakamoto who opened the inning with a walk. Haag notched his third three-hit game of the year going 3-5 with a double and two singles. Freshman outfielder Chase Moore came in to score the second run on a balk. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Sakamoto in the seventh inning.
Anteaters' outfielder Chris Klemm led off the eighth with his fourth home run of the season off Fresno State junior righthander Bryan Wolfenbarger. UC Irvine rallied to tie the game at 3-3 on back-to-back homers by pinch hitter Matt Falk and catcher Jeff Werhun to lead off the ninth against Wolfenbarger.
FS sophomore righthander Chad Edwards (2-1) tallied his second win of the season by recording the final three outs.
Bulldog junior infielder Casey McGehee(2-3) tallied his team leading 16th multi-hit game of the season and is four career hits shy of tying Eric Fox (1982-83, 85) for tenth in Bulldog history with 225.
The Bulldogs travel to Hawai'i for a three-game set against the Rainbows beginning Friday at 9:35 p.m. PDT.
