FRESNO, Calif. - It was a beautiful day at Bulldog Diamond until a Southern storm blew in hard from all aspects -- a storm in the form of sophomore All-American Jamie Southern.
Southern baffled the San Jose State Spartan batters with a one-hit, 10-strikeout performance in Fresno State's 5-0 Western Athletic Conference victory.
After giving up a leadoff triple to start the game, Southern struck out 10 of the last 22 batters en route to picking up her 11th shutout win in 16 victories. She struck out 10 or more batters for the 13th time on the season and pitched one-hit ball for the fourth time on the year.
At the plate, Southern went 3-4 but freshman shortstop Christina Clark was an offensive highlight reel as she went 2-4 with two runs, a RBI, a double and a triple. Clark set a new Fresno State freshman record for total bases (108) in a season.
The top three Bulldog batters each pushed a runner across home plate while senior catcher Pam West knocked in two after going 1-2 with a walk. Freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz (1-3, sac fly) and junior right fielder Lori Hoffman (2-3, run, sac fly) had a RBI for the 'Dogs.
Fresno State, which scored five runs on 11 hits, picked up a run in the first, added two in the second while tallying a run in the fifth and sixth.
In the first with two outs, Hoffman singled to center field. Southern followed suit with a single to left before freshman designated player Elizabeth Pierce followed with a single to right field to load the bases. West walked on a 3-1 pitch and recorded the first RBI.
In the second with one out, freshman left fielder Nicole Shan singled up the middle. Clark then tripled to center field to score Shan. Diaz then hit a deep sacrifice fly to left, which was caught in foul territory and allowed Clark to score.
In the fifth, Hoffman led the inning off with a single to left center. Freshman Daisy Gaynor then came in to pinch run for Hoffman. Southern hit a single to right field to move Gaynor up to second. After Pierce flew out to center field for the first out, West singled to center field to knock in Gaynor as Southern went to second.
In the sixth, Clark led the inning off with a double to right center. Diaz beat out an infield single. Hoffman then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Clark from third.
San Jose State's starting pitcher Carol Forbes took the loss as she allowed five runs (all earned) on 11 hits while walking one to go to 15-12 overall. SJSU leadoff batter and second baseman Tara Hall had the lone hit for the Spartans.
