What's Coming Up
No. 42 Fresno State (16-7) travels to Boise, Idaho, this week for the WAC Tournament. The Bulldogs are the No. 3 seed and will play sixth-seeded Hawai`i on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the first round. Fresno State will be looking to avenge last year's first round loss, the earliest exit in program history.
What Just Happened
The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season by going 2-1 last week. Fresno State opened up by losing its first home dual match of the year to Pepperdine by a 5-2 score. But one day later, the Bulldogs bounced back for 7-0 victories over Cal Poly and Nevada. One week after claiming WAC Player of the Week honors, Alex Krohn was even better, winning all three of his singles matches and adding one doubles victory. Krohn has now won eight singles contests in a row.
Modoc and Almada Continue to Roll
Fresno State's No. 1 doubles team of Hector Almada and Sergiu Modoc pulled off one of their biggest wins of the season Friday against Pepperdine in knocking off ninth-ranked Calle Hansen and Diego Acuna 9-8 (7). Almada and Modoc, ranked 23rd in the nation, are now 13-4 on the season and have placed themselves in a good position to be selected to the NCAA Doubles Tournament. In the match against Hansen and Acuna, the Bulldog duo overcame a 6-3 deficit in the tiebreaker for the victory.
Krohn Very Impressive
During an eight-match stretch during March, Alex Krohn primarily sat on the sidelines while freshman Sergiu Modoc played No. 6 singles. But on April 6, Krohn was reinserted into the lineup, and since he has flourished. The junior, who was named WAC Player of the Week on April 14, has won eight singles matches in a row to improve to 17-9 (11-4 dual) on the year heading into the WAC Tournament.
Fresno State in the WAC Tournament
Fresno State has won the WAC Tournament twice ? in Fresno in 1996 and in San Diego in 1999. The Bulldogs have also twice finished as the runner-up (1993 and '01). Last year, Fresno State lost in the first round for the only time in program history.
