FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State track and field gave the Red Wave faithful an outstanding performance on Saturday afternoon in its final home meet of the year.
The Bulldogs claimed numerous first-place finishes against Cal State Bakersfield in the non-scoring dual meet.
Saturday's meet also featured performances from alumni of both schools, some of which notched equally impressive marks. The most notable perhaps came from current Bulldog graduate assistant and former All-American E.J. Jackson, who owned the best time in the 100-meters at 10.0. Former Bulldog Trishan Jackson recorded a 12.20 en route to a victory in the 100-meters on the women's side.
However, the afternoon belonged to the student-athletes, as Fresno State was well-represented in almost every event. Overall, the Bulldogs locked up the first-place spot in 17 different events.
Jesse Smith improved on his career-best with a time of 10.40 in the 100-meters, good for third place overall. Senior Phil Ogilvie (Clarksburg, Calif.) shaved nearly four seconds off his previous season-best in the mile, winning the event with a 4:08.65.
Senior Mark Unzueta (Lemoore, Calif.) closed out his final meet at Warmerdam Field by sharing the best mark in the pole vault, netting a 4.89 along with teammate Russell Weaver (Clovis, Calif.).
Junior Aaron Vasquez (Merced, Calif.) won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.19, while freshman Josh Blecha (Martinez, Calif.) posted a 1.88m top-finish in the high jump in his first action of the year.
For the women, junior Katie Christianson (Indian Wells, Calif.) placed first in two separate events: 100-meter hurdles (14.45) and long jump (5.57m). Freshman La' Sha Hill (Oakland, Calif.) also won twice, in the shot put (13.58m) and javelin (29.20).
Junior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) continued her dominance in the 3000-meter run, checking in at 10:08.40 to win the event by 30 seconds over her next closest competitor.
Freshman Annie Malaythong (Merced, Calif.) recorded a career-best 3.66m in the pole vault, matching the mark need for a regional qualifying berth. Fellow rookie Sunny Arada (Clovis, Calif.) ran a 56.70 to win the 400-meters, the best time for any Bulldog women's harrier this year.
Sophomores Jennifer Tyler (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Crystal Phillips (Long Beach, Calif.) won the 800-meters and 200-meters, respectively. Senior Mandy Hollister (Turlock, Calif.) closed out her career with a first-place effort in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:04.10.
Fresno State will face Cal Poly and CS Northridge in a tri-meet next weekend in Northridge.
