Golf Pushes to First at WAC Championship

HOUSTON, Texas- The Bulldogs played hard and it shows. After the second round of the WAC Championship, the 'Dogs are in first place with 571. Fresno State is five strokes ahead of one of the two teams head coach Mike Watney mentioned as the toughest teams in this competition which is Tulsa, in second with 576 and UTEP which is in third with 578.
"The two teams I predicted to be our competition turned out to be the two teams right behind us," head coach Mike Watney said.
Individually, senior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) pushed up 11 spots and tied the course record with his second round shot of 66, which helped him take second place with 139 (73-66), two strokes behind first place and last year's champion, Tulsa's David Inglis (137). Junior Chad Spencer (Rockiln, Calif.) pulled up four spots and is tied for third with 142 (72-70), freshman Ryan McDonald (Rocklin, Calif.) is tied for eighth with 144 (73-71, sophomore Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) is tied for 12th with 146 (74-72) and junior Jeremy Moreno (Visalia, Calif.) is in 48th with 160 (81-79).
"Nick was spectacular. He played a fantastic second round," head coach Watney said.
Play will continue tomorrow morning.
