FRESNO, Calif. - After a shocking turn-around call that went in the favor of Hawai'i in game one, Fresno State was even more flustered when the Rainbow Wahine pinned a 7-1 victory on the Bulldogs in the night cap.
Hawai'i (21-14, 2-0 WAC) went for the jugular in the first inning as the Rainbow Wahine scored three runs on five hits.
Senior right-hander Leslie Poole was quickly chased out of the circle after allowing three runs on three hits to four batters faced in 1/3 inning pitched.
Freshman right-hander Laura Ferreira came in to relieve Poole and gave up two hits while striking out two to stop the bleeding.
Fresno State answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, senior catcher Pam West walked. Junior center fielder Mitzi Ing beat out an infield single to third as West advanced to second. Senior Sha Oliver was summoned to pinch run for West. Sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco reached on a fielder's choice as Ing was forced out at second and Oliver went to third. Freshman shortstop Christina Clark then hit a shot to deep short to knock in Oliver.
Hawai'i would shut the door on the Bulldogs in two of the final three innings after tacking on four more runs. The Rainbow Wahine scored three runs in the fifth and another in the seventh.
In the fifth with one out, a UH double and a run scoring triple by Marie Jackson gave Hawai'i its first run of the inning. A single to center field knocked in Jackson while a fielding error by Bulldog second baseman Leticia Pacheco allowed the third UH run.
After back-to-back singles by Hawai'i in the top of the sixth, sophomore right-hander Amanda Wolf came in to relieve Ferreira, who allowed three runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
Wolf pitched stellar ball in the sixth as she had to get out of a bases loaded jam three times to keep the Rainbow Wahine scoreless.
In the seventh with two outs, Wolf gave up her first hit and only run when she gave up a long ball to left field by UH catcher Denise Dahlberg.
Hawai'i scored seven runs on 14 hits and had one error while the Bulldogs scored a run on six hits and committed three errors. UH stranded 11 runners while Fresno State left 10.
Fresno State (18-17, 0-2 WAC) and Hawai'i will square off again tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. in WAC doubleheader play.
