FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team erased all doubts from its performance a day earlier when the Bulldogs blanked Hawai'i, 7-0, behind the performance of sophomore All-American Jamie Southern.
In the circle, Southern pitched three-hit ball and struck out nine en route to her seventh shutout on the year. At the plate, she went 4-4 with a double and two RBI.
The Bulldogs also handed 18th-year head coach Margie Wright her 900th school win as the NCAA's all-time softball winningest goes to 1,048-360-3 in 24 years.
Picking up its first Western Athletic Conference win of the season, Fresno State scored seven runs on 12 hits and had one error.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first as they scored in the first before adding another run in the third and five in the sixth.
The 'Dogs got their first run when Southern doubled to right center to score freshman shortstop Christina Clark, who led the inning off with a walk.
In the third, freshman designated player Elizabeth Pierce singled to center field to score freshman Daisy Gaynor, who came in to pinch run for junior right fielder Lori Hoffman after Hoffman collected a two-out single.
Fresno State scored five runs on four hits while Hawai'i committed two errors in the sixth inning. Clark got a two-out run-scoring single before three runs scored on a Hoffman single and a two-base UH error. Southern then singled to right field to knock in Hoffman.
Hawai'i, which fell to 21-15 overall and 1-2 in the WAC, was led by leadoff batter and right fielder Tracie Uchima, who went 2-3. Right-hander Melissa Coogan took the loss and fell to 16-9 overall after giving up seven runs (two earned) on 12 hits while walking two and striking out one.
