Bulldog Update
After competing for two straight weeks at home, the Bulldogs travel to San Diego this weekend for an appearance in the Cal-Nevada Collegiate Championships. That kicks off a two-week road excursion that will also feature a trip to the Mt. San Antonio College Relays the following weekend.
It's Elementary
The elementary schools portion of the 75th annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays takes place on Wednesday, Apr. 9 at Warmerdam Field. The competition begins at 2 p.m. and officially closes out this year's Fresno Relays schedule.
Allen, Burgess Claim Titles at Fresno Relays
The Bulldogs were well-represented with three first-place finishes last weekend at the Fresno Relays, two of which came on the men's side. The meet included 74 events combined (field and running) and was a non-scoring team competition. Sophomore Reggie Allen won the 400-meter dash when he clocked in at 48.52, while senior Ryan Burgess took first-place honors in the javelin at 57.31m to edge out teammate Javon Kemp. The men's squad earned 10 top-three finishes on the afternoon overall.
Ogilvie Has Been Outstanding
Senior Phil Ogilvie has been an impressive harrier for the Bulldogs through the early part of the outdoor season. Ogilvie currently leads the 'Dogs with team-high marks in two different events (1,500-meters at 3:52.38 and steeplechase at 9:27.37). He stands in second place in the mile run and 5,000-meters.
Hollister Hurdles The Competition
The women's team registered five top-three finishes on the afternoon, led by senior Mandy Hollister. She paced the women with a strong effort in the 400-meter hurdles, checking in with a career-best 1:01.93. Sophomore Crystal Phillips took second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.94. Junior Kara June also earned a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter race when she crossed the line at 4:36.47.
Christianson Combines Her Efforts
Junior Katie Christianson has proven to be one of the Bulldog's most versatile athletes once again this year. She currently stands among the top-three in five different events on the Fresno State depth chart. Christianson is the team's top competitor in three events: 100-meter hurdles (14.16), javelin (103-01/31.42m) and long jump (5.66m). She is second in the 200-meters (24.71) and high jump (1.63m).
A Look Back: 2002 Cal-Nevada Championships
Men's Team
The men's team placed second at last year's event with 103 total points. Perhaps the most outstanding performance from the Bulldog men came in the sandpit. It was there that Duran Archie, Kevin Carano and Kyrah Ayers finished one-two-three. All three members recorded season-bests with Archie leaping 50-10.25, Carano marked at 50-1.75 and Ayers measured 49-6.50. Alex Mason finished second in the 800-meters with a personal-best 1:51.3. Roosevelt Cook crossed in fifth place and clocked 1:52.22. Two other Bulldogs took home awards also, Chris Berrian and Philip Ogilvie. Berrian took third place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.96. Ogilvie was third in the 1,500 meters and clocked a season-best time of 3:54.26.
Women's Team
The women's team finished in second place with 123 points at last year's event. Crystal Simmons was the top performer, setting her second Fresno State team record with a second place leap in the long jump with a mark of 20-5.25. Simmons captured first place in the triple jump with a distance of 42-2.75, an event in which she set the record in last season at 42-10.25. Both of her jumping marks were NCAA Provisional standards. Simmons also earned her the Outstanding Female Field Performer Award. Ocie Parks went on to win the 100-meter dash with a personal-best 11.79. The women also captured a pivotal third place in the 4x400-meter relay by clocking a season-best 3:45.23. A top-three finish guaranteed the Bulldogs a second place finish overall. Additionally, the women finished third in the 4x100-meter relay with another season-best time of 45.41. Senior April Wiechmann topped her four performances on the day with a NCAA Provisional mark in the hammer, as her throw of 186-8 was also a personal-best.
The Fraley File
Head coach Bob Fraley is in his third season at the helm of the Bulldogs. He also holds the position of Director of Track and Field. He was named WAC Women's Head Coach of the Year in 2001-02 after guiding the squad to its first-ever WAC Outdoor Championship title.
