EL PASO, Texas- Junior Trevor Chatterton (Concord, Calif.) earned 6,083 points in the men's decathlon and claimed the championship outright on the second day of competition at the 2003 WAC Outdoor Championships.
Chatterton's effort represents the second straight season that a Bulldog athlete has won the decathlon, as Justin Schwartz captured last year's title with 6,018 total points. It also puts Fresno State in first place with 22 points entering Friday's action- a 16 point-cushion over the next closest squad, UTEP.
Amidst a heavy dust storm and howling, brisk winds, Chatterton was able to outduel a field of five other competitors to get the victory. He brought home the discus title with a toss of 35.25m (115-8) for 569 points and later won the 1,500-meter race with a time of 5:53.24.
Taking second was freshman David Frazeur (Mission Viejo, Calif.), who grabbed 5,816 points along a victory in the 110-meter hurdles (15.88). Sophomore Leif McMurry (Clovis, Calif.) took fifth place with 4,519 points but earned the crown in the pole vault with a mark of 4.55m (14-11).
For the women's hepthatlon, junior Katie Christianson (Indian Wells, Calif.) tallied 4,839 points to finish fourth. Freshman Tonisha Henson (Long Beach, Calif.) took seventh on the afternoon with 4,245 total points.
The women stand in third place overall with seven points, trailing leader Nevada by 11.
The remainder of the championship gets underway on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PST with men's and women's field events.
