EL PASO, Texas- The final day of competition at the 2003 WAC Outdoor Championships found the Fresno State men's squad in fourth with 102 points, while the women placed eighth overall with 61 points.
The Rice women and UTEP men returned to their wining ways, taking home the team titles. Rice, who was down over 40 points heading into Saturday, tallied 172.83 total points to knock off Nevada who had 147.33. On the men's side, UTEP's sprinting corps went 1,2,3 in both the 100 and 200 meters to secure the title over SMU, 198-146.
A fourth-place finish was the best of the day for the women's squad, as the Bulldogs accomplished the feat twice. The 4x400-meter relay squad of Sunny Arada (Clovis, Calif.), Katie Christianson (Indian Wells, Calif.), Jennifer Tyler (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Crystal Phillips (Long Beach, Calif.) clocked in at a season-high 3:47.15.
The other fourth-place effort on the women's side had senior Lisa Krauter (Clovis, Calif.) throw a 45.31m in the discus.
The men fared slightly better, notably in the pole vault as sophomore Russell Weaver (Clovis, Calif.) improved his NCAA Regional qualifying status with a career-best 5.18m showing to take first place honors. Teammate Mark Unzueta (Lemoore, Calif.), who had held the Bulldog's top mark in the event at 5.10m entering this weekend, soared to 4.90m for a runner-up finish to Weaver.
Both of the men's relay squads were impressive on the afternoon, as the 4x100 and 4x400 teams both finished second. The 4x100 crew of Kevin Carano (Fresno, Calif.), Jesse Smith, Chreston Anderson (Long Beach, Calif.) and Reggie Allen (Fresno, Calif.) ran a season-best 40.35, while the 4x400 team of Allen, Anderson, Chris Berrian (Winton, Calif.) and Aaron Vasquez (Merced, Calif.) checked in at 3:09.08- also a season-best.
Allen took fourth in the 400-meter dash, running a personal-best 47.03 to qualify for NCAA Regional competition. In field event action, junior Joe Vasquez (Selma, Calif.) improved on his season-high mark with a toss of 51.90m to take sixth.
The Bulldogs are idle this week as they prepare for NCAA Regionals, which are scheduled for May 30-31 at Stanford University.
