FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's top doubles team of Hector Almada and Sergiu Modoc lost to second-seeded Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo of San Diego State 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Tournament in Athens, Ga.
The loss ends the season for Almada and Modoc, who wrap up the 2002-03 campaign with a 15-6 record. They entered the NCAA's ranked 21st in the nation.
Due to the rain that fell all day at the University of Georgia's tennis center, the match was forced indoors. Maiberger and Redondo picked up two breaks in the first set and one in the second for the victory.
Fresno State was returning a team to the NCAA Doubles Tournament following a one-year absence. Peter Luczak and David Mullins were the last team to play in the competition, that being in 2001. No Bulldog tandem has ever advanced past the second round in the NCAA's.
