Track And Field Takes Third Place At Tri-Meet

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.- Both the men's and women's track and field squads placed third in Sunday afternoon's tri-meet between Cal State Northridge and Cal Poly. The Mustangs captured both the men's and women's titles.
Fresno State's men's team placed among the top-three finishers in 10 different events, led by junior Joe Vasquez (Selma, Calif.). Vasquez was second in both the discus (163-04/49.78m) and the hammer (191-05/58.34m) to lead the Bulldogs in the field events. Senior Kyle Carano (Fresno, Calif.) improved on his regional qualifying mark by notching a 15.21m clip in the triple jump.
Senior Mark Unzueta (Lemoore, Calif.) earned a runner-up finish in the pole vault with a 4.72m showing. Fellow senior Alex Mason (Alameda, Calif.) helped the 'Dogs with a time of 3:54.68 in the 1,500-meter run, also good for second place.
The women's squad produced a total of 17 top-three finishes, including two first-place performances by sophomore Crystal Phillips (Long Beach, Calif.) Phillips registered two season bests on the day, winning the 100-meters with a regional qualifying mark of 11.79 and the 200-meters at 24.21. Sophomore Jennifer Tyler (Los Angeles, Calif.) clocked a personal-best 2:13.39 in the 800-meters, while freshman Annie Malaythong (Merced, Calif.) was tops in the pole vault at 3.65m.
Leading the Bulldogs in the field events were senior Lisa Krauter (Clovis, Calif.) and freshman La'Sha Hill (Oakland, Calif.). Krauter's 146-05/44.63m was good for third place in the discus, while Hill posted a 28.18m in the javelin for second place honors.
Fresno State will compete at the Modesto Relays next weekend.
