Bulldog Update
Fresno State's final tuneup before WAC Championships is scheduled for this weekend, when the Bulldogs compete at the Modesto Relays. The 'Dogs are coming off a third place finish at last weekend's tri-meet in Northridge and will be looking to close out the regular season on a positive note. Several athletes have already earned NCAA regional qualifying marks, while others are just shy of matching the standard.
Cal Poly/Cal State Northridge Tri-Meet Recap
The men's team placed among the top-three finishers in 10 different events, led by junior Joe Vasquez. Vasquez was second in both the discus (163-04/49.78m) and the hammer (191-05/58.34m) to lead the Bulldogs in the field events. Senior Kyle Carano improved on his regional qualifying mark by notching a 15.21m clip in the triple jump. Senior Mark Unzueta earned a runner-up finish in the pole vault with a 4.72m showing. Fellow senior Alex Mason helped the 'Dogs with a time of 3:54.68 in the 1,500-meter run, also good for second place.
Regional Review
The number of Fresno State student-athletes that have qualified for NCAA Regionals continues to increase with each passing meet. Joe Vasquez has made his mark in two events, surpassing the qualifying mark in the discus (51.60m/169-03) and hammer (191-11/58.50m). Dustin Lawrenson holds the team's top mark in the discus at 52.64m, while Kyle Carano (15.21m in the long jump) and Russell Weaver (16-00.75/4.90m in the pole vault) are the other field competitors. 800-meter specialist Alex Mason is in with a time of 1:50.42, while Jesse Smith has notched a 10.40 in the 100-meters.
Best In The Field
One of the team's bright spots this year has been the performance of field-events specialist Joe Vasquez. He has notched NCAA regional qualifying marks in two events: discus (169-03/51.60m) and hammer (191-11/58.50m). Both are personal bests for the junior, who leads the Bulldogs in the hammer and is second in the discus.
2002 Modesto Relays: A Look Back
The men's squad totaled four top 10 finishes, while the women recorded 10 top 10 ranks. Kyle Carano led the Bulldogs with his second place finish in the triple jump, landing a mark of 50-1.75. Roosevelt Cook and Alex Mason finished seventh and ninth in the 800 meters. Cook crossed in a time of 1:52.80, while Mason followed at 1:53.22. Regional Review

Crystal Phillips joined the crew last weekend when she clocked a 11.79 in the 100-meters.
Christianson Combines Her Efforts
Junior Katie Christianson has proven to be one of the Bulldog's most versatile athletes once again this year. She currently stands among the top-three in five different events on the Fresno State depth chart. Christianson is the team's top competitor in three events: 100-meter hurdles (14.16), javelin (103-01/31.42m) and long jump (19-02.00/5.84m).
