SACRAMENTO- Junior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) ran a 10:33.07 in the prelims of the 3000-meter steeplechase on Wednesday evening on the opening night of the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Unfortunately, that mark was not enough to qualify June for the event finals scheduled for Friday. June, the only Fresno State athlete to advance to the NCAA Championships on either the men's or women's side, placed 10th in the second heat of competitors and 21st overall.
June was awarded a berth in this weekend's NCAA Championships after she clocked in at 10:51.78 in the steeplechase during the NCAA West Regionals on May 31 at Stanford University, good for 14th overall in the second section of athletes. While that mark did not automatically qualify her for this week's NCAA Championships, June earned a wild-card entry into the event as a result of her 10:25.47 time (achieved back on Apr. 17 at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays) being one of the nation's top marks overall in 2003.
June was one of Fresno State's most impressive runners throughout the year. Her 10:25.47 mark- also a personal best- had been tops in the WAC for much of the season. She once again displayed her conference dominance at the WAC Championships in El Paso, Texas, where she placed first in the event for the third consecutive year with a time of 10:50.12.
