2003 WAC Championship Recap
The Bulldogs took fourth place overall and garnered 102 total points during the 2003 WAC Outdoor Championships in El Paso, Texas on May 17. The most noteworthy accomplishment came in the pole vault, as Russell Weaver improved his NCAA Regional qualifying status with a career-best 5.18m showing to take first place honors. Mark Unzueta, who had held the Bulldog's top mark in the event at 5.10m entering the weekend, soared to 4.90m for a runner-up finish. Both relay squads were impressive, as the 4x100 and 4x400 teams both finished second. Reggie Allen took fourth in the 400-meter dash, running a personal-best 47.03 to qualify for NCAA Regional competition. In field event action, Joe Vasquez took sixth in the discus with a toss of 51.90m.
Trevor Chatterton Claims Decathlon Title
Trevor Chatterton earned 6,083 points in the decathlon, winning the event on the second day of competition at the 2003 WAC Outdoor Championships. His victory comes on the heels of Justin Schwartz winning last year's event with 6,018 points. Chatterton won the discus title with a toss of 35.25m (115-8) for 569 points and later won the 1,500-meter race with a time of 5:53.24. Taking second was David Frazeur, who grabbed 5,816 points while Leif McMurry took fifth place with 4,519 points.
Best In The Field
One of the team's bright spots was the performance of field-events specialist Joe Vasquez. He notched NCAA regional qualifying marks in two events: discus (169-03/51.60m) and hammer (191-11/58.50m). Both are personal bests for the junior, who led the Bulldogs in the hammer and ranked second in the discus.
