FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's outstanding junior tight end Duncan Reid is one of 22 players selected to the watch list for the 2003 John Mackey Award, which is presented annually to college football's most outstanding tight end. He is one of six juniors to make the senior-laden list.
The Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC) announced the preliminary contenders for award the today. The winner of the award will be announced in early December and will receive his trophy at the NCSC's Annual Awards dinner in April of 2004.
"This is a great honor for Duncan and our program," said head coach Pat Hill. "He is certainly a deserving candidate. As our program continues to develop and gain respect across the nation, more and more of our players are being considered for these types of awards. It's a great sign of the respect out there for Bulldog football."
The 2002 winner, Dallas Clark, was selected in the first round of the 2003 NFL draft by the Indianapolis colts. Finalist Mike Seidman was selected in the 3rd round by the Carolina Panthers while fellow finalist Kellen Winslow Jr. will be returning for his junior year at Miami (FL).
Reid was an honorable mention All-WAC selection as a sophomore, in which he caught 25 passes for 321 yards, averaging 12.8 yards per reception.
The John Mackey Award was created by the NCSC under the guidance of board member Don McPherson, a Nassau County native and former NFL and Syracuse University All-American quarterback. Mackey, also a Nassau County native, is regarded as one of the best athletes to have played the position of tight end. In addition to being an NFL Hall of Famer, he is a Super Bowl winner (Baltimore, Super Bowl V) and was the first President of the NFLPA.
"We have had a lot of players be mentioned for national awards so far," said Hill. "That's a great sign that our program is continuing to develop exceptional players. Duncan came here as a walk-on and has worked extremely hard to make himself a better player and his very deserving. I expect him to have a big season and be an important part of our offense."
