FRESNO, Calif.- Junior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) will be the lone Bulldog student-athlete competing at the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships when competition gets underway Wed., June 11, in Sacramento, Calif.
June has qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase preliminaries, which are slated for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Should she advance, the finals are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
June clocked in at 10:51.78 in the steeplechase during the NCAA West Regionals on May 31 at Stanford University, good for 14th overall in the second section of athletes. While that mark did not automatically qualify her for this week's NCAA Championships, June earned a wild-card entry into the event as a result of her 10:25.47 time (achieved back on Apr. 17 at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays) being one of the nation's top marks overall in 2003.
A WAC Scholar Athlete and Dean's List selection, June has been one of Fresno State's most impressive harriers this year. Her 10:25.47 mark- also a personal best- has been tops in the WAC for much of the season. She once again displayed her conference dominance at the WAC Championships in El Paso, Texas, where she placed first in the event for the third consecutive year with a time of 10:50.12.
In addition, her 10:25.47 time is currently the best in Fresno State women's track and field history.
June was a provisional qualifier to the 2002 NCAA Track and Field Championships, but failed to make the cut. Under the new system, she will get a chance to showcase her talents this weekend.
