FRESNO, Calif. - Hector Almada won his singles and doubles matches on Saturday at the Polo Tennis National Collegiate Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
The Polo National College Tournament is a flighted competition and features some of the best programs in the nation. Nationally-ranked programs such as Texas A&M, Texas, Arkansas, Rice, Oklahoma and host Tulsa are participating.
In the Flight A singles bracket, the 76th-ranked Almada defeated No. 74 Antonio Ruiz of Texas 6-3, 6-4. Later in the day, he teamed with Sergiu Modoc to knock off Arkansas' Rohan Gajjar and Andrei Nicoara 8-3 in a Flight B doubles match. Modoc and Almada are currently ranked sixth in the nation.
Unfortunately, that was about all the good news the Bulldogs received on the day. No. 94 Stefan Suta, Sergiu Modoc, Alex Krohn, Greg Shearer and Andy Sinn all lost their singles matches.
In fact, the only other match Fresno State won was a Flight A doubles contest in which No. 38 Shearer and Suta took out Matt Roberts and Viktor Hebrand 8-3.
The tournament is being competed at the Michael Case Tennis Center, site of the 2004 NCAA Tennis Championships. Matches will conclude tomorrow.
