FRESNO, Calif. - On the strength of a 15-hit offensive performance, Fresno State posted an 8-4 victory over the Alumni Saturday at Beiden Field.
With the win, the Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak to the Alumni and now lead the all-time series 20-5.
The Alumni jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Casey McGehee. The Bulldogs answered back in the home half of the first on a two-run double by senior infielder Kyle Wilson off Jeff Weaver. The Varsity squad touched Weaver for three more in the second highlighted by a run scoring double off the bat of sophomore Kent Sakamoto. Weaver was credited with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two over two innings.
With one out in the top of the third, Brandon Gemoll trimmed the lead to 5-4 on a three-run homer to right field off Fresno State sophomore righthander Matt Garza. Gemoll had a team high three hits to pace the Alumni. Garza scattered four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out two over five innings to earn the victory. Senior lefty David Griffin, freshman southpaw Eddie Romero and sophomore righthander Michael Cooper combined to pitch four shutout innings in relief.
In the sixth, sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett laced a run scoring single to right to extend the 'Dogs lead to 6-4. Fresno State added two more in the seventh on a solo home run by junior infielder David Gomez and a RBI single off the bat of senior infielder Chris Patrick.
The Bulldogs open their 2004 season next weekend, Feb. 6-8, when they play host to No. 3-ranked Stanford.
