FRESNO, Calif. - Senior lefthander David Griffin limited Stanford to two hits and three walks while striking out five over the first 7.2 innings to lead Fresno State to a 3-1 win over No. 3-ranked Stanford in the Bulldogs' season opener Friday at Beiden Field.
With the loss, Stanford drops to 3-1 on the season and had a 14-game road winning streak dating back to last season snapped.
Griffin (1-0) set the tone early retiring the first nine Cardinal batters in order. In total, he retired the side in order in five of the eight frames he pitched in to earn the victory. With two outs in the fourth Danny Putnam singled to left to register Stanford's first hit of the day. John Mayberry Jr. accounted for Stanford's second hit with a line drive double off the top of the leftcenter field wall in the top of the fifth.
FS sophomore righty Michael Cooper came on with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and retired all four batters he faced to record the save.
Stanford starter Romanczuk (1-1) took the loss allowing three runs and seven hits over the first 5.1 innings. In the fifth, Bulldog senior infielder Ryan Haag laced a two-run single to center to break a scoreless tie. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the sixth on senior outfielder Tom Shannon's one-out solo home run that cleared the left field scoreboard. Sophomore designated Kent Sakamoto paced the Bulldogs with three hits.
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. Fresno State sophomore righthander Matt Garza is scheduled to oppose Stanford righty Matt Manship (0-0, 11.57).
