Three Bulldogs Move Into Third Round of Wilson/ITA Regionals

FRESNO, Calif. - Greg Shearer, Charles Irie and Jakub Cech won their matches on Friday and advanced to the third round of the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships, being played this week in Berkeley, Calif.
Of the three players, Cech was the only one not to receive a first round bye. In the first round, he knocked off Chad Faulk of Hawaii 6-4, 6-2. After a brief rest, he turned around and grinded out a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) victory over Andy Koharski of Washington.
Cech will play ninth-seeded Roman Borvanov of Portland in the third round on Friday.
Shearer and Irie both received first round byes and thus had to win only one match. In the second round, the sixth-seeded Shearer defeated Tyler Wilson of Santa Clara 6-0, 6-2. He will now play Daniel Sebescen of California on Saturday in the third round.
Irie had to work a bit harder for his victory. The ninth-seed defeated Chad Faulk of Hawaii 7-5, 7-5 in his only match. The sophomore will take on Matt Loucks of Portland in the third round.
Sam Tadevosian, Andy Sinn and Sergiu Modoc both lost their first round matches and dropped into the consolation round.
In doubles, the teams of Cech/Tadevosian and Sinn/Irie both won their first round contests.
Play in the ITA Regionals continue through the weekend at the Hellmann Tennis Center in Berkeley.
