TULSA, Okla. - In the first game of a critical two-match road trip to conclude the regular season, Fresno State battled Tulsa to a 1-1 tie on Friday night in WAC soccer action.
As if the conference standings were not jumbled already, Friday night's tie between two of three teams tied for fifth place only complicates matters. Players from both sides were not sure how to react afterward, congratulating each other while at the same time wondering about the outcome of Boise State-UTEP.
The Bulldogs (5-7-4, 2-2-3 WAC) were thankful for junior midfielder Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), who scored her third goal of the year off a header in the 72nd minute to knot the game at 1-1. Senior Heather Young (Morgan Hill, Calif.) notched her fourth assist of the year on the play. Anderson's goal forced overtime, but neither team could find the net for the game-winner.
Tulsa (6-9-3, 3-3-1 WAC) got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute following a goal from Carrie Schnarre. Krista Barker was credited with the assist, as Schnarre collected a loose ball off a free kick and shot left side.
Despite Tulsa holding 9-4 edge in shot attempts in the second half, it was Anderson's goal that accounted for the only second-half scoring. Tulsa outshot Fresno State 17-12 on the evening and held a one-sided 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore keeper Jeannette Paine (Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada) came up with an outstanding performance in goal, making seven saves. Sophomore forward Cortney Sobrero (Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded four shots (three on goal), while Anderson added three.
The contest had a physical feel, with Fresno State committing 20 fouls to Tulsa's 15. Tulsa held a 3-2 shot edge over both overtime sessions.
Fresno State now faces Rice in Houston in the regular season finale on Sunday, Oct. 31. The Bulldogs will learn more about their postseason chances following tonight's Boise State-UTEP contest.
