FRESNO, Calif. - After snapping its three-game losing streak with an impressive performance against SMU, Fresno State travels to Houston this week to play at Rice on Saturday at noon PT. The Bulldogs enter 4-3 (1-3 WAC) after blanking SMU 42-0 last week, the team's first victory since Sept. 18. The Owls are 3-5 (2-3) and have lost three in a row, including Saturday's 39-22 defeat the hands of Tulsa. This week's contest will be televised by KFRE WB 59 (Comcast cable 5), with Ralph Wood and Randy Rosenbloom calling the action from Rice Stadium.
Fresno State leads Rice 5-0 in a series that has featured three nail-biters and two blowouts. In each of the last two years - and three times overall - the Bulldogs prevailed when the game came down to a field goal on the last play.
Last year, Fresno State won 31-28 when Brett Visintainer nailed a 39-yard field goal at the final gun. The Owls led 28-20 in the fourth quarter with less than five minutes remaining before the Bulldogs mounted their comeback. Both games at Rice Stadium have come down to the final seconds, as well. In 2002, Rice missed a field goal that would have tied it as time expired, and in 2000 Fresno State scored 11 points in the final 1:58 to win 27-24. With the Owls joining Conference USA next year, this will the final meeting between these two teams for a while.
