FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State takes on historical rival San Jose State this week in the regular season finale for both schools. The Bulldogs are 7-3 (4-3 WAC) and riding a four-game winning streak that has seen them outscore their opponents by a combined 218-52. The Spartans are 2-8 (1-6) and have lost six in a row, including a double overtime defeat at home to nationally-ranked Boise State two weeks ago. Saturday's game is being televised live on KFRE WB 59 (Comcast cable 5), with Ralph Wood and Randy Rosenbloom calling the action.
Wendell Mathis rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns while Bryson Sumlin racked up 147 yards as host Fresno State routed Nevada 54-17 on Saturday. The Bulldogs' running back tandem both surpassed 100 yards on the ground for the third time this year and second game in a row. Fresno State, which entered seventh nationally in scoring offense, has now surpassed 50 points in three consecutive games for the first time since 1942. Paul Pinegar rebounded from throwing an interception on his first pass to go 11-of-18 for 171 yards and two touchdowns while the Bulldog defense was again strong, limiting the Wolf Pack to just 17 points, more than two TDs below their season average.
Heading into this week's game, Fresno State's offense is clicking as well as it ever has during the Pat Hill Era. The Bulldogs are sixth nationally in scoring offense, averaging 38.3 points per game. But what the team has accomplished in the last four contests has been simply crazy. During its current four-game winning streak, Fresno State is averaging 54.5 points per game, and it has surpassed the 50-point mark in the last three, the first time that has happened since 1942. The last time the Bulldogs were this potent offensively was in 2001 when they averaged 40.0 points per game and racked up a school record 560 points.
