FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's senior offensive tackle Logan Mankins has been named to the Walter Camp All-America second team. The team will be announced tonight on ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
Mankins, a first-team All-WAC honoree, dominated his position like no other offensive lineman in program history. He recorded 82 "pancake" blocks, believed to be a school record. He ended up the regular season having graded out 91 percent successful, well over the benchmark of 80 percent.
On the year, Mankins helped establish the Fresno State offensive line as the best in the Western Athletic Conference. Behind the senior, the Bulldogs averaged 228 rushing yards per game, the 15th-best mark in the nation. And during the last five contests of the season - all blowout victories - Fresno State averaged 294.2 yards per game on the ground and 25 rushing TDs.
The Bulldogs ended the regular season with 36 rushing touchdowns, the fourth-best total in the nation. Bryson Sumlin - who became the 12th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards - and Wendell Mathis both had 100 yards in the same game four times, including each of the last three. In addition, Mathis is just 131 yards from joining Sumlin on the 1,000-yard list. That would be the first time in program history two running backs went over 1,000 yards in the same season.
The Walter Camp All-America award is another in a long list for Mankins, who is expected to be a high round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. In addition to being named first-team All-WAC, he became the first offensive lineman ever to receive team MVP honors.
Entering the bowl game, Mankins has started 39 games in his Bulldog career, including all 11 in 2004. He is the first Fresno State player named second-team All-American since Alan Harper and David Carr in 2001.
The Bulldogs are currently preparing for the MPC Computers Bowl in Boise, Idaho, on Dec. 27. Fresno State will take on 18th-ranked Virginia in an ESPN-televised game.
