Bulldog Update
The women's indoor squad turns its attention to the WAC Indoor Championships, slated for this weekend in Nampa, Idaho. The competition, hosted by Boise State, takes place Thursday, Feb. 26 through Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Jacksons Track at the Idaho Sports Center. Multi-events begin Thursday and Friday afternoon, with evening competition scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
A Look Back- 2003 WAC Indoor Championships
Fresno State will look to impove on last year's seventh place finish of 53 points. Nevada won the women's title with 127.50 points, with Rice (120) taking second and UTEP (93) third. The pole vault proved to be Fresno State's best event on the women's side, where Bulldog athletes occupied the top two spots. Junior Lexine Lesser, who won the event last year at 12-6.25 (3.82m), is back to defend her title. Last season's 4x400 meter relay team of Katie Christianson, Jennifer Tyler, Sunny Arada and Crystal Phillips placed second with a time of 3:52.58. Currently, Phillips leads the conference in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.06.
Vaulting To The Top
Three Fresno State athletes are currently ranked in WAC's top-10 among pole vaulters. Junior Lexine Lesser is fourth at 12-9.25 (3.89m), a mark she achieved at the National Pole Vault Summit back in January. Juniors Michelle Lennox and Annie Malaythong sit in a tie for the sixth-best mark at 11.7.75 (3.55m), both of which are career indoor bests for both athletes.
Lee Adams/CSUB Roadrunner Invitational Recap
In its last action, Fresno State's track and field squad recorded some impressive individual performances on Feb. 14 at the Lee Adams/CSUB Roadrunner Invitational. Senior Kara June established a new personal-best in the 3,000-meter run when she clocked in at 10:04.45 en route to winning the event. Freshman Mallory Webb took first-place honors in the javelin with a toss of 145-09. Senior Jenny Moore led all competitors in the triple jump with a leap of 38-00.5. Fresno State athletes locked down the top three spots in the pole vault, with junior Annie Malaythong leading the group at 11-6. Michelle Lennox and Samantha Modeste finished second and third, respectively, at 11-0.
Moore Takes High Jump, Bulldogs Take Second Again
The Bulldogs tallied 122 points for a second place finish at the Wolf Pack Invitational on Feb. 7, checking in behind host Nevada which recorded 291.5 points. Senior Jenny Moore registered the Bulldog's only first-place finish of the day when she won the high jump with a mark of 5-05.75 (1.67m). Moore also took second in the triple jump at 37-01.00 (11.30m) and fifth in the long jump with a mark of 17-02.00 (5.23m).
Bob Fraley Named 2003 Nike Coach Of The Year
Fresno State Director of Track and Field Bob Fraley was named USA Track & Field's 2003 Nike Coach of the Year back on Dec. 2. Fraley, the chair of USATF men's pole vault development, received the award Friday, Dec. 5, at Jesse Owens Awards Dinner and Xerox Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at USATF's 2003 Annual Meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina.
