NAMPA, Idaho- Heading into the final day of competition at the 2004 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Fresno State stands in eighth place with 10.50 points among the conference's nine-school field.
Nevada checks in as the leader on the women's side with 74 points, a sizeable lead over second-place UTEP at 42. Rice (40.50) is third, followed by SMU (35), host Boise State (31), Louisiana Tech (25), Tulsa (11), Fresno State (10.50) and Hawai'i (4). Boise State currently leads the men's portion of events with 66 points.
A strong performance in the women's distance medley relay helped the Bulldogs gain five points right away. The team of freshman Zinzi Evans (Oakland, Calif.), freshman Germaine Engstrom (Angels Camp, Calif.), junior Jennifer Tyler (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) finished fourth overall with a time of 12:10.85.
Fresno State's remaining points were credited to a pair of pole vaulters- juniors Annie Malaythong (Merced, Calif.) and Michelle Lennox (Pearl River, N.Y.). Malaythong tallied a personal-best indoor mark of 12-2.50 (3.72m) to take fourth place in the event, earning 4.5 points in the process. Lennox earned one point for her 11-2.50 (3.42m) finish that placed her eighth among event participants.
Junior Lexine Lesser (Hanford, Calif.), who won gold in the pole vault last year with a mark of 12-6.25 (3.82m), recorded a no-height.
Overall on the day, Fresno State registered 11 different top-10 finishes.
Juniors Crystal Phillips (Long Beach, Calif.) and Jennifer Tyler (Los Angeles, Calif.) will both be in action during tomorrow's event finals. Phillips ran a personal-best 24.52 in the 200-meter run prelims and also qualified for the 60-meter dash final with a time of 7.57. Tyler's time of 56.35 awarded her a berth in Saturday's 400-meter dash final.
Fresno State sophomore Tonisha Henson (Long Beach, Calif.) was the club's lone participant in the pentathlon on Thursday evening. Henson took ninth overall with 3,006 points. Her best finish came in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.29, good for sixth overall. Henson took eighth place honors in the 800-meter run (2:37.65) and shot put (32-00.75/9.77m).
