Match #5: BYU at Fresno State
Thursday -- Wathen Tennis Center -- 2 p.m.
Match #6: Fresno State at Santa Clara
Saturday -- Santa Clara, Calif. -- 1 p.m.
What's Coming Up
Fresno State (2-4) returns to the court this week for one at home and one on the road. The Bulldogs host 68th-ranked BYU on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center and two days later travel to play at Santa Clara at 1 p.m. Fresno State is looking to snap a four-match losing streak.
What Just Happened
The Bulldogs had a tough go of times in Houston, losing to No. 38 Arizona on Jan. 31 as well as host and 22nd-ranked Rice on Feb. 1. Against the Wildcats, Fresno State started slowly and never could get its teeth into the match, losing 4-3. The following day, despite very solid play from Greg Shearer, the Bulldogs lost 5-2. A bright spot was the play of Shearer, who went 2-0 in singles over the weekend and upset 15th-ranked Robert Searle of Rice 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Fresno State All-Time vs. This Week's Opponents
The Bulldogs have been simply dominating against their next opponents. Against BYU all-time, Fresno State holds a 7-1 record, including a 4-3 victory last year in Boise, Idaho. Even more impressive is the team's record against Santa Clara. The Bulldogs are 11-0 against the Broncos, the last contest coming a year ago when Fresno State won 5-2.
Great Week for Shearer
Greg Shearer's performance last week was a big silver lining in Fresno State's two losses to Arizona and Rice. Playing at the No. 1 position, the junior took out Whi Kim 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the Bulldogs' match against the Wildcats. But it was against the Owls that Shearer picked up perhaps his most impressive win when he upset 15th-ranked Robert Searle 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. On the year, Shearer is now 10-6 overall and 4-2 in dual matches. He is the only Fresno State player who has won at least 10 singles matches.
Krohn Continues Solid Play
Despite the team's four-match losing streak, Alex Krohn's ability to play at the top of the lineup is something that has head coach Brad Dancer smiling. The senior, who was highly successfuly playing primarily at No. 6 last year, is now 2-1 playing at No. 2, including victories over the 59th and 86th-ranked players in the nation.
