FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Lucia Tallo was named the Western Athletic Conference's women's tennis Player of the Week. Tallo is the second Bulldog player in a row to claim WAC honors after Jelena Pandzic won last week.
Tallo, a junior from Zurich, Switzerland, went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles this weekend to lead 14th-ranked Fresno State to the championship of the UNLV Invitational. Tallo won in straight sets at No. 2 singles against her opponents from Boston College and No. 63 Washington State. In the finals, the junior's 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over Jenny Kuhn of No. 27 Tulane with the dual match score tied at 3-3 clinched victory for the 14th-ranked Bulldogs, who have won five in a row.
In doubles, Tallo teamed with Jelena Pandzic to win at No. 1 doubles to claim the doubles point, as well. Tallo has now won five dual matches in a row and owns a record of 11-4 (5-1 dual). In doubles, she is 5-1 with Pandzic at No. 1.
It marks the second WAC Player of the Week honor of Tallo's career. She also was named POW on March 17, 2003, after winning the clinching match against both Pennsylvania and Arizona.
