Bulldog Update
The first weekend of March features an outdoor competition for the entire Fresno State track and field squad. Both the men's and women's teams will be in action on Saturday afternoon in Stanislaus, Calif. Four other schools are scheduled to participate in the meet: host Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Sonoma State and San Francisco State. Looking ahead to the following weekend, the same five schools will match up again in a men's-only competition in Chico, Calif.
2004 WAC Indoor Championships Recap
Fresno State finished eighth overall at the 2004 WAC Indoor Championships with 29.50 total points. Nevada captured the women's title with 151 points. Senior Kara June was tremendous for the Bulldogs, finishing third overall in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:06.95. She also checked in sixth in the mile run with a time of 4:59.53. Junior Jennifer Tyler placed seventh in the 400-meter finals at 56.90. In the shot put, sophomore La'Sha Hill took fourth with a toss of 46-11.75 (14.32m). A strong performance in the women's distance medley relay helped the Bulldogs gain five points. The team of freshman Zinzi Evans, freshman Germaine Engstrom, junior Jennifer Tyler and senior Kara June finished fourth overall with a time of 12:10.85. Fresno State's remaining points were credited to a pair of pole vaulters- juniors Annie Malaythong and Michelle Lennox. Malaythong tallied a personal-best indoor mark of 12-2.50 (3.72m) to take fourth place in the event, earning 4.5 points in the process. Lennox earned one point for her 11-2.50 (3.42m) finish that placed her eighth among event participants.
Henson Takes Ninth In Pentathlon
Fresno State sophomore Tonisha Henson was the club's lone participant in the pentathlon at the 2004 WAC Indoor Championships. Henson took ninth overall with 3,006 points. Her best finish came in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.29, good for sixth overall. Henson took eighth place honors in the 800-meter run (2:37.65) and shot put (32-00.75/9.77m). She was 10th in the long jump and 11th in the high jump.
Lee Adams/CSUB Roadrunner Invitational Recap
In its first outdoor action of the year, Fresno State's track and field squad recorded some impressive individual performances on Feb. 14 at the Lee Adams/CSUB Roadrunner Invitational. Senior Kara June established a new personal-best in the 3,000-meter run when she clocked in at 10:04.45 en route to winning the event. Freshman Mallory Webb took first-place honors in the javelin with a toss of 145-09. Senior Jenny Moore led all competitors in the triple jump with a leap of 38-00.5. Fresno State athletes locked down the top three spots in the pole vault, with junior Annie Malaythong leading the group at 11-6. Michelle Lennox and Samantha Modeste finished second and third, respectively, at 11-0.
Bob Fraley Named 2003 Nike Coach Of The Year
Fresno State Director of Track and Field Bob Fraley was named USA Track & Field's 2003 Nike Coach of the Year back on Dec. 2. Fraley, the chair of USATF men's pole vault development, received the award Friday, Dec. 5, at Jesse Owens Awards Dinner and Xerox Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at USATF's 2003 Annual Meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina.
