FRESNO, Calif. - Brigham Young left hander Patrick Wells delivered 7 1/3 strong innings to lead the Cougars to a 5-3 victory over Fresno State Wednesday at Beiden Field. Wells improved his record to 3-2, limiting the Bulldogs to three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six. The Cougars improved to 8-15 on the year and 3-0 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic while Fresno State snapped a three-game winning streak falling to 9-13 this season.
Fresno State senior infielder Kyle Wilson was 3-4 on the night, scoring twice and driving in two with a two-run homer in the sixth. It was Wilson's third blast of the year.
The Cougars scored first in the second inning on infielder Tim Law's RBI single. The Bulldogs answered in the home half of the second when Wilson and senior infielder Chris Patrick opened the frame with back-to-back doubles. Patrick was 2-4 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs trailed 4-3 after Wilson's home run, but the Cougars added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Cougar infielder Wade Vest singled home a run off of Fresno State reliever Rudy Quinonez. Fresno State sophomore right hander Michael Cooper (1-3) was dealt the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three.
The Bulldogs return to action Thursday against Dallas Baptist. The first pitch is scheduled for approximately 6:30 pm.
