FRESNO, Calif. - Dallas Baptist held off Fresno State late in the game Thursday to earn a 9-7 victory at Beiden Field. Patriot right hander Aaron Klusman (3-0) pitched the final 4 2/3 innings for the win, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six. Fresno State freshman left hander Brandon Miller got the loss, surrendering six runs on 10 hits in four innings.
The Bulldogs' offense produced 13 hits, highlighted by home runs from freshman outfielder DeAndre Miller, senior infielder Chris Patrick and sophomore designated hitter Kent Sakamoto. But it was not enough as Dallas Baptist was led by infielder Drew Moss' 5-5 performance, pacing a 16-hit attack.
With the bases jammed in the first, Patriot infielder Ben Zobrist doubled to left center, clearing the bases to give Dallas Baptist an early 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs tallied two runs of their own in the home half of the first on sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett's RBI double and Sakamoto's RBI triple.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 8-7 in the eighth on consecutive homers by Sakamoto and Patrick. The Patriots knocked two homers of their own, one by outfielder Sean Burgess in the second and the other from infielder Cody Montgomery in the sixth.
Dallas Baptist improved to 14-7 on the season, while Fresno State lost its second consecutive, falling to 9-14.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday evening at 6:30 pm at Beiden Field against Monmouth.
