FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State sophomore right hander Rudy Quinonez delivered a stellar pitching performance Friday at Beiden Field in the Bulldogs' 11-3 victory over Monmouth in the annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. Quinonez improved to 2-4 on the year, going seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven. Monmouth starter Joe Cummings was given the loss in six innings of work, surrendering seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits.
Fresno State improved to 10-14, earning a birth in the championship game of the classic against BYU. Monmouth fell to 2-9 on the season.
In the bottom of the first, sophomore designated hitter Kent Sakamoto singled home senior infielder Ryan Haag to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first. Then in the third, senior infielder Chris Patrick singled home senior catcher Brandon Marcelli to give the 'Dogs a 3-1 advantage. Monmouth could only manage one more run off of Quinonez, a solo homer by Hawks outfielder Fran Rotella in the sixth.
Marcelli was 3-3 on the night, highlighted by a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Sakamoto was 2-4 with two RBI and freshman infielder Christian Vitters went 2-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs on a triple off the right field wall in the seventh.
Fresno State freshman right hander Ryan Ponce pitched the final two innings, allowing one run in the eighth on Monmouth infielder Marc Weres' sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs will be the visiting team in Saturday's Pepsi/Johnny Quik championship game against the Cougars of BYU. The first pitch is scheduled for approximately 6:30 p.m.
