FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Pat Hill took his troops through a spirited 60 play scrimmage Friday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. The scrimmage was the first of the spring session, which has reach its midpoint.
Hill wanted to see the younger players in the program so many veterans saw limited, if any action. Starting quarterback Paul Pinegar only appeared for 12 plays.
"This was a scrimmage for the young guys," Hill said. "We needed to see them get some reps and get some good footage of them on tape so we can evaluate. There were a lot of guys who really played well. We have some very good young players in the program."
Hill was pleased with the pace of the scrimmage and that only two penalties were called in 60 plays. Several Bulldogs looked sharp, including sophomore running back Robbie Dubois, who had four runs more than 10 yards, including runs of 22 and 15 yards. Freshman back Shannon Dorsey was equally as impressive with four long runs and one reception out of the backfield.
Receiver Joe Fernandez scored the only touchdown of the scrimmage on a 15 yard pass from freshman quarterback Tom Brandstater.
Defensive end Brian Morris, the top returning sack specialist in the WAC, had one sack in the scrimmage in limited action. There were no turnovers committed.
Hill singled out several players, including Dorsey and Dubois, for their progress thus far in the spring session. Hill is pleased with the progress being made by sophomore end Marlon Brisco and sophomore tackle Louis Leonard.
The Bulldog coaching staff is holding its annual coaches clinic this weekend, with more than 200 coaches in attendance at the Fresno State football offices and the Picadilly Hotel.
The Bulldogs return to practice Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the football practice facility. The next scrimmage is March 26 at 6 p.m. at Central Valley Christian High School in Visalia. Admission is free and concessions will be served.
