FRESNO, Calif. - Loyola Marymount righthander Jeff Stevens pitched five shutout innings and was aided by a 17-hit attack in the Lions' 14-2 victory over Fresno State Tuesday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs lost their season high tying third in a row to fall to 6-10 on the season while the Lions won their second straight to improve to 7-4.
Stevens (1-0) earned his first victory of the season, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out three.
LMU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first and held a 12-0 advantage after six innings. Lions' infielder Clint McGill was 3-5 with a homer and four RBI while infielder Kyle Mura went 4-4 with two runs scored and three RBI to pace LMU's offensive attack.
Fresno State senior infielder Ryan Haag singled three times and went 3-5 to notch his fifth multi-hit game of the year. Senior infielder Chris Patrick (2-5) and sophomore designated hitter Kent Sakamoto (2-4) collected run scoring hits in the seventh inning to break up LMU's shutout bid. Senior catcher Brandon Marcelli went 0-4 to snap a team season high nine-game hitting streak.
Bulldog sophomore righthander Rudy Quinonez (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over three innings in his first career start.
Fresno State plays host to Dallas Baptist in the first of a three-game set Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
