FRESNO, Calif. - Danny Dorn hit a game-winning three-run home run with two outs in the top of the tenth inning to lift Cal State Fullerton to a 12-9 win over Fresno State in the rubber match of the series Sunday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs fell to 12-16 on the season while the Titans improved to 14-13 overall.
Justin Turner opened the tenth with a single and move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ronnie Prettyman. An intentional walk to Kurt Suzuki and a fly out to center by Felipe Garcia set the stage for Dorn's heroics. The homer was his first of the year and came off Fresno State sophomore right hander Matt Garza who suffered the loss. Garza (2-2) was touched for five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over three innings.
Mike Martinez (3-1) tossed five shutout innings in relief, scattering four runs and a walk while striking out four to earn the victory.
Fresno State senior infielder Ryan Haag delivered an opposite field home run to left field to lead off the first inning. The lead-off blast marked his second in a Bulldog uniform with his first one coming March 21, 2003 against Minnesota. Haag also singled and doubled and was 3-6 with a team season high four runs scored.
CSF outfielder Bobby Andrews tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer to center to lead off the third inning. The Bulldogs answered with two in the home half of the inning on Chase Moore's second home run of the year and an RBI double by Richie Robnett. Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, the Titans staged a three-run rally with run scoring hits by P.J. Pilittere and Bobby Andrews and a sacrifice fly from Dorn.
The lead didn't last long for the Titans as the Bulldogs erupted for five runs in the home half of the frame capped by a three-run round tripper from Chris Patrick. Trailing 9-5 after six innings, CSF chipped away at the deficit, with two runs in the seventh on Sergio Pedroza's fourth homer of the year and single runs in the eighth and ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Fresno State heads on the road for the first time in a month when it opens conference play at No. 3-ranked Rice next weekend. First pitch on Friday is 5 p.m. CST.
