Bulldog Update
A busy week for Fresno State track and field begins on Thursday afternoon, when the small high schools competition kicks off the 76th annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays. The Fresno Relays, one of the Valley's most highly-anticipated track and field events, continues on Saturday afternoon with competition featuring large high schools, elite performers and unattached entrants. The Bulldogs then close out the week with an appearance at the Cal-Nevada Championships, slated for Sunday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
A Look Back: 2003 Fresno Relays- University Division
The Bulldogs were well-represented with three first-place finishes, two of which came on the men's side. Reggie Allen won the 400-meter dash when he clocked in at 48.52, while Ryan Burgess took first-place honors in the javelin at 57.31m to edge out teammate Javon Kemp.
A Look Back: 2003 Cal-Nevada Championships
The Fresno State men's squad finished third overall with 76.50 points, while the women's crew came in seventh with a score of 43. Alex Mason and Phil Ogilvie, along with Aaron Vasquez, each tallied a second-place effort. Vasquez clocked in at 47.93 in the 400-meter dash, while Ogilvie notched a 3:52.45 in the 1,500-meter run.
Regional Report
Two Bulldogs have already notched NCAA Regional qualifying marks: senior Joe Vasquez and junior Russell Weaver. Vasquez, who owns the team's best mark in four different events, has qualified in the hammer (199-10/60.91m) and discus (170-6/51.97m). Weaver owns the top mark in the pole vault at 17-1- a personal best.
First-Year Forces
Rookies that are listed at the top chart on the depth chart include the following: Sean Marzolf (1:52.95 in the 800-meter run and 8:39.50 in the 3,000-meter run), Ryan Moore (52.62 in the 400-meter hurdles), Robert Calzadilla (22-10 in the long jump and 45-9.25 in the triple jump).
WOMEN'S TEAM
A Look Back: 2003 Fresno Relays- University Division
Senior Mandy Hollister paced the women with a strong effort in the 400-meter hurdles, checking in with a career-best 1:01.93. The men's squad earned 10 top-three finishes, while the women's club registered five.
A Look Back: 2003 Cal-Nevada Championships
The Fresno State men's squad finished third overall with 76.50 points, while the women's crew came in seventh with a score of 43. Highlighting the women's side were two outstanding performances. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Kara June posted Fresno State's only first-place finish with a time of 10:36.46. Lexine Lesser set a new personal-best with a 12-08.00 (3.88m) mark in the pole vault.
Regional Report
On the women's side, five athletes have registered NCAA Regional qualifying marks. Three of the five comprise the Bulldog pole vaulting contingent, led by Annie Malaythong and Michelle Lennox. Both reached a career-best 12-6.25 (3.82m) back on Mar. 20 at the Cal Poly Invitational. A third vaulter, Lexine Lesser, qualified last week with a 12-6 (3.81m). Two freshman will also be competing in May- Mallory Webb and Katie Richardson. Webb tossed a 154-9.75 in the javelin, while Richardson notched a 159-8 in the discus.
Bob Fraley Named 2003 Nike Coach Of The Year
Fresno State Director of Track and Field Bob Fraley was named USA Track & Field's 2003 Nike Coach of the Year back on Dec. 2. Fraley, the chair of USATF men's pole vault development, received the award Friday, Dec. 5, at Jesse Owens Awards Dinner and Xerox Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at USATF's 2003 Annual Meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina.
