Fresno State softball's sophomore right-handed pitcher Laura Ferreira (El Sobrante, Calif.) was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first time in 2004 after helping the Bulldogs open WAC play victoriously as the team went 4-2 overall last week.While garnering the honor for the second time of her career, Ferreira went 2-1 in the circle with a shutout and 17 strikeouts in 18.0 innings for a 1.56 ERA last week.
Recording two complete games, she picked up a 3-2 victory over Ohio State before following up with a 4-0 shutout win over Nevada after dropping a 7-0 decision at No. 13 Stanford.
In WAC action, Ferreira tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out six against Nevada for her fourth shutout win of the season.
Against Ohio State, she scattered nine hits, allowed two runs (one earned), walked one and struck out seven.
In her last 41.0 innings, Ferreira has walked just three batters after opening the year with five walks in the first 13.1 innings. She has struck out 17 in her last 18.0 innings of work (6.61 strikeouts per 7/IP) while fanning 25 batters, including eight against No. 1 Arizona, in the last 25.0 innings.
With a 3-2 record in her last five starts, Ferreira owns season-best streaks of 15.1 scoreless innings and 15.1 innings without an earned run.
She is 5-2 in her last six starts while picking up a win in relief. In this span, she has allowed 12 runs (11 earned) with three walks and 38 strikeouts in 40.1 innings for a 1.92 ERA.
