FRESNO, Calif. - Junior infielder David Gomez hit a game-winning RBI single with one out in the ninth inning to lift Fresno State to a 5-4 win over Dallas Baptist in the series finale Saturday at Beiden Field.
The win snapped a season high five-game losing streak for the Bulldogs who improved to 7-12 on the season while the Patriots lost for the first time in six contests to drop to 12-5. Fresno State also remained perfect in one-run games this season with a 4-0 mark.
With one out in the ninth, freshman DeAndre Miller walked and then moved to second on an infield single by senior infielder Ryan Haag. Sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett, who collected Fresno State's first triple earlier in the game, proceeded to reach base on an error by DBU shortstop Ben Zobrist to load the bases and set the stage for Gomez' heroics. Robnett was 3-5 to tally his third three-hit game of the season.
DBU reliever Stuart Sutherland (0-1) picked up his first loss of the season after allowing Miller and Haag to reach base in the ninth. Sutherland scattered one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Fresno State junior right hander Matt Scott (1-1) pitched a season high four innings in relief, limiting the Patriots to a run on four hits while fanning two.
Dallas Baptist struck first in the second on an RBI fielder's choice ground out by catcher Ned Yost. Fresno State erupted for four runs in the home half of the inning with RBI singles by senior infielder Chris Patrick (2-4) and freshman outfielder Nick Moresi, a run scoring double by senior outfielder Tom Shannon and a wild pitch to plate Shannon.
The Patriots chipped away at the three-run deficit with single runs in the third sixth and seventh. Ben Zobrist was 3-5 with an RBI to lead the Patriots at the plate.
Fresno State opens the 26th Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic against Chicago State Monday at 6:30 p.m.
