FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's golf head coach Angie Cates announced the addition of five players to the 2004-05 women's golf roster. Adrianna Chico, Yumi Chung, Holly Cornell, Katrina Sutton and Tiffany Veerkamp have signed national letters of intent, rounding out the inaugural squad.
"I have high expectations for next year's team," Cates said. "There is no doubt in my mind that we will make it to post season."
Chico (Hacienda Heights, Calif.), a transfer from Mt. San Antonio Junior College, finished third in the Southern California Regionals and third in league - both finishes coming during the fall of 2003.
"Adrianna is a very consistent player," Cates said. "She is someone you can count on to put up consistent numbers in a tournament."
Chung (Diamond Bar, Calif.) is another transfer from Mt. San Antonio Junior College, boasting Junior College League tournament and Regional Championship victories for fall 2003.
"Yumi has won at the junior college level and she can shoot low numbers; she definitely has the capability to shoot under par," Cates said.
A transfer from Oregon State, Cornell (Corvallis, Ore.) trained with Cates and brings the experience of two collegiate tournaments - the Oregon State home tournament and the Vanderbilt tournament in Nashville, Tenn. - to the Bulldogs.
"Holly has the best work ethic I have ever seen. She is a self-made player," Cates said. "She is so determined to be successful and I think that it will all come together for her here at Fresno State."
Sutton (Camarillo, Calif.), a senior at Adolfo Camarillo High School, is a four-year letterwinner in basketball and golf. In 2003, she finished first out of 96 girls in Team CIF and was named 2003 VCJGA Player of the Year and Ventura County Player of the Year. Her other honors include team and league MVP.
"Katrina will probably be our darkhorse," Cates said. "She is going to come in and surprise a lot of people."
Veerkamp (Placerville, Calif.) also brings Division 1 experience to the team, competing at UNC Greensboro.
"Tiffany's game will reach a new level because she is looking forward to being back in California where she will be able to focus more on her game," Cates said. "She is a well-rounded person who will bond well with our team."
Cates said she is excited about the variety of players on the team and expects a successful season starting this fall.
"We have a really good mix coming in," she said. "A good mix of transfers with a lot of experience and our freshman class is solid."
The aforementioned signees, along with Laura Luethke, Meggie Fagundes and Brittany Cooley, comprise the 2004-05 inaugural women's golf squad.
