Bulldogs Sweep WAC Player of the Week Honors

DENVER - Fresno State catcher Brandon Marcelli and right-handed pitcher Matt Garza have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 19-25.
Marcelli, a senior from Eureka, Calif. (College of the Sequoias), hit .636 (7-11) in three games against Hawai'i. He had at least two hits in each game and had a total of seven RBI while scoring two runs. On Saturday, Marcelli was 2-for-4 with an RBI in Fresno State,s 2-0 win. On Sunday, he was 2-for-3 with a two-run single and a three-run homer as the Bulldogs went on to win the game, 13-8. The five RBI tied a team season-high.
It is Marcelli's second career WAC Player of the Week award and first for a Bulldog player this year.
Garza, a sophomore from Fresno, Calif. (Washington Union), threw a four-hit complete game shutout in Fresno State's 2-0 win over Hawai'i on Saturday. It was his first career complete game performance. Garza struck out a career-high seven batters in the game and walked just one. At one point, he retired 18 consecutive batters, the longest such streak by a Fresno State pitcher this season.
It is Garza's first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and second for a Fresno State pitcher this season.
Other player of the week nominations included: senior shortstop Brian Finegan, Hawai'i; junior outfielder Chris Gimenez, Nevada; and junior shortstop Paul Janish, Rice.
Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: junior Ricky Bauer, Hawai'i; sophomore Travis Sutton, Nevada; and junior Wade Townsend, Rice.
