Griffin Leads Bulldogs Past Louisiana Tech

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State senior lefthander David Griffin struck out a game season-high and career-high 13 in earn his third victory of the season during an 11-3 win over Louisiana Tech Saturday at Beiden Field. Griffin went the distance, allowing three runs on nine hits without a walk. The Bulldogs (13-20) won their first conference game, snapped a six game losing streak and evened the three-game set with La. Tech at 1-1. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (12-20) fell to 3-5 in WAC play. Tech's starter Brandon Hudson (0-1) was dealt his first loss of the year, pitching one and one-thirds innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out one.
Fresno State scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett's team-high fifth home run of the year. Senior infielder Ryan Haag led the Bulldogs' 17-hit attack, going 3-5, stealing two bases, scoring a run and driving in four.
Louisiana Tech scored one run in the second when infielder Kyle Spangler led of the inning with a solo homer, his fifth of the season. Spangler went 3-4 on the evening.
But Fresno State increased its lead with one run in the home half of the second and two more in the third. In the fifth, the Bulldogs plated two more on Haag's RBI single and senior infielder Chris Patrick's run scoring single to left. Patrick was 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Louisiana Tech starter Brandon Hudson became the designated hitter in the second, then drove in a run in the fourth on a fielder's choice. Outfielder Will Wade also drilled his first home run of the season in the fifth to complete Louisiana Tech's scoring.
The series concludes Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Beiden Field.
